Austria: Full lockdown in Salzburg and Upper Austria

The regions of Salzburg and Upper Austria will begin a full lockdown from Monday,22 November, 2021, which regional leaders say will last "several weeks" but hope to end by Christmas.

There is no choice but to order a complete blockade of the region, Salzburg governor Wilfried Haslauer said Thursday afternoon at a news conference.

"We consider locking the door a significant public insult, but now we have no choice," he said.

The length of the lockdown is yet to be confirmed, but Haslauer said it will last at least three weeks, and most likely four. Enjoyed this post? Never miss out on future posts by following us.

As with previous closures, people can only leave their homes for essential purposes, including buying food, exercising and accessing medical care, including vaccinations. Hotels, restaurants and retail stores will be closed.

He urged all eligible people in the region to receive the first doses of the vaccine as well as the boosters, "so that we can get out of this impasse as soon as possible, before Christmas if at all." body." This week, Salzburg followed in Vienna's footsteps by making booster doses possible from four months after the second dose.

Haslauer also says that all cities in Salzburg will offer vaccinations seven days a week.

He noted that from Monday, Salzburg had the strictest measures in place in Austria, but said: "The time for these measures to take effect is the time that our hospitals have not."

“Lockdown is an effective short-term measure, but it is not a solution. Vaccination is the only solution, he said.

During the shutdown, schools will also be closed to return to homeschooling, although students with additional learning needs or need to attend school (for example, if their parents have a medical emergency) ) will be able to always be present directly.

As of Thursday afternoon, Salzburg has 31 Covid19 patients in intensive care in the hospital, 27 of whom are unvaccinated, said Christian Stöckl, deputy governor and medical adviser for the region. The remaining four are all at an above-average risk of contracting Covid19 due to their age or health condition.
