Portugal : Food Waste Reduced with Covid-19 Pandemic

A survey released by the Deco-Consumer Protection Association shows that the Covid-19 pandemic has greatly reduced the food waste of the Portuguese people.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, 800 Portuguese participants were surveyed in January and February, and then at two different times in April. According to the survey results released by DECO in a statement, at the beginning of this year, 56% of respondents said they would throw "some food" at home. However, the percentage of consumers who admitted to throwing away food fell to 19% in April.

Deco compared the house with one person and four or more people, and the results showed that "before these confinement times, there was a big difference between what was considered thrown away."

In the questionnaire, the Consumer Protection Association also asked about the reasons for wasting food, and a quarter of the answers indicated that the food was spoiled because it was not eaten in time. Too much food is also one of the most common reasons.

The survey also said that more than half of the respondents said they had difficulty understanding the date on the label, while 47% said they had difficulty finding the expiration date on the packaging.
