Spain : Barcelona revoked Juan Carlos I's highest honour

The Barcelona City Council has voted to revoke the highest honor for the gold medal, which was awarded to former King Juan Carlos I of Spain in the year of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

At a special meeting on Thursday, city councillors also voted to withdraw any other honors given to the former monarch — and formally criticized the Spanish government, saying it played a role in helping organize the former king’s departure from Spain.

Juan Carlos left Spain for Abu Dhabi in early August after continuing corruption allegations, including alleged payments from Saudi Arabia to a private bank account in Switzerland. However, only Catalonia supports independent parties, namely the Junts (JxCat) and Esquerra Republicana (ERC) of every Catalan who voted for the withdrawal of the award.

Barcelona mayor Ada Colau’s party Barcelona enComú abstained, while the Catalan Socialist Party (PSC), Barcelona Pel Canvi (Barcelé Canvi), Ciudadanos (Ciudadanos) (Cs) And the People's Party (PP) voted against it.
