Italy: Mosquitoes do not spread coronavirus




According to preliminary results of research conducted by scientists from the Higher Institute of Health (ISS), neither the tiger mosquito nor the ordinary mosquito is able to carry the virus behind COVID-19. Indeed, inside them, Sars-Cov-2 "cannot reproduce," so even if you bite an infected person, it can't get infected.

The study, based on evidence from experimental infections, has raised widespread concern since the onset of heat that mosquitoes may be vectors of the new Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus, a respiratory virus that is transmitted from person to person, mainly with little droplets emitted when sneezing or coughing. or touching your mouth, nose, or hand with your hands after touching a recently contaminated surface or object.

There is currently no scientific evidence that transmission can occur through insects, that such blood, e.g. ticks or mosquitoes, can carry other types of viruses (so-called arbovirus) and are responsible for diseases such as dengue fever and yellow fever.


A study by virologists and entomologists of the ISS in collaboration with the public Veterinary Institute l'Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe) showed that when Sars-Cov-2 penetrates inside the mosquito through a meal of infected blood, it is not able to reproduce, and therefore it cannot be transmitted from a mosquito by a bite. 


The final results, which will be published soon, will provide experimental evidence that will exclude mosquito involvement in COVID-19 transmission. Until now, this was only a hypothesis.
